General

Can bicycles be parked at the airport?

Bicycles may always be left at Groningen Eelde Airport in the public bike racks located beneath the control tower. Lockable storage is also possible. Should you wish to make use of the lockable area send an email in advance to: receptie@gae.nl. you will receive more relevant information. NB This must be done in advance.  

 

Are dogs allowed on board the aircraft?

Dogs may be allowed on board so long as you have had contact with the airline beforehand. Dogs are allowed in the departure hall but must be placed in their own pet crate at the gate and then will be  carried to the aircraft. Smaller dogs may sometimes be allowed in the passenger cabin but this varies per airline so please check beforehand to find out specific regulations.

Are there guided tours of Groningen Eelde Airport?

Yes, tours are possible for businesses and business clubs. For more information or booking of a tour please contact: marketing@gae.nl. There are no tours for schools etc. Please take a look at our special kids page for information, experiments and pictures to colour in. Very handy for presentations or projects.

You are always welcome to visit the airport where you will find a viewing area next to the 'Bites and Flights' restaurant which offers superb views of the apron and the runway.

Is help available for physically challenged passengers?

Groningen Eelde Airport has good facilities for physically challenged passengers, ensuring a comfortable journey. Please go to the 'special assistance'  page for more information.

Lost property?

Lost Property can be picked up at the handling office, which is located in the terminal opposite the Travel Agent.

Arrival & Departure

How long before departure should I arrive at the airport?

Check-in desks open two hours prior to departures. Each airline determines its own closure time which varies from 30 to 45 minutes before departure. For specific information please refer to the airline's website. We advise passengers to get to check-in well in advance of closing time in case there are queues.

Picking up passengers

After the plane has landed it takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes for passengers to leave the plane, pick up baggage and exit. It could take less or more time depending on how full the plane is.

Is it possible to alight from the plane at a stopover (en route) airport?

For security reasons it is not possible to leave the plane at a stopover airport. Passengers may only alight at the airport stated on their ticket.

Baggage

Is medication allowed on board?

Medication is allowed on board as long as it is accompanied by a covering letter from a doctor or pharmacist.

Ensure medication is in your hand (cabin) baggage, not in checked-in (hold) baggage. We also advise you to have a prescription in English  available to be shown to customs or security officials on request. Syringes must be packed well. Any medication that has to be kept cool should be carried in cool bags or vacuum flasks but must adhere to current hand luggage regulations. There are no cooling facilities on board.

Is food allowed in hand baggage?

Food may be carried in hand baggage following special rules regarding liquids and sharp objects. Click here for more information.

Is it possible to take luggage to the airport in advance?

For security reasons it is not possible for baggage to be dropped off in advance and picked up later. This applies to all flights. There are no luggage lockers at Groningen Airport.

Is it possible to reserve a car parking space?

It is possible to reserve a parking space online in areas P1, P2 or P3. Please visit online reservations for all options and rates.

How does the online reservation system work?

It is possible to enter and leave car parks P1, P2 or P3 with vehicle registration number recognition. The number must be submitted during the reservation process. NB An exit ticket must be taken from the machine upon entry. This ticket must be put into the machine upon leaving.

It is also possible to enter P1, P2 or P3 using an entry code or barcode. This code is on the parking ticket you received by email. Upon arrival at the barrier you must enter the code into the machine. The system recognises the arrival and will issue an exit ticket.

How do I know if my reservation has been successful?

If you have received a confirmation email then your reservation is confirmed.

How long after making a reservation will my parking ticket be issued?

A ticket will be issued within 24 hours after payment and confirmation. If you have not received a ticket first check your email spam box, otherwise send en email to parking@gae.nl  or call 050 3097070 (8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday)

How far in advance can I make a parking reservation?

Parking spaces can be reserved up to one year in advance.

What is the cut-off point for making a car park reservation?

A reservation may be made up and until four hours before your flight. NB Full = full

Is it possible to make multiple reservations for the same period?

Yes, it is possible, via your account.

My car has been parked for longer than my reservation. What should I do?

No problem, however the extra time has to be paid for and will be charged at the standard hourly rate over and above what you have already paid. When entering you will have received a ticket. Before exiting take this ticket to a payment machine and pay the excess. After payment you have 15 minutes to exit the car park.

Is it possible to enter the car park using a credit card?

It is not possible to enter the car park using a credit card. It is possible to pay for parking at the machine and the online reservation system with a credit card.

I don't have a printer. Can I enter the car park just using my reservation?

The confirmation email contains an entry code. This code gives access to the car park when you key it into the machine by the barrier. If your reservation is for P1 it is also possible to enter using the number plate recognition system. NB Always take an exit ticket from the machine upon entry.

Is it possible to make a car park reservation without a flight number?

Yes, a car park reservation may be made without a flight number.

Is there any transportation from the car parks to the terminal?

All car parks at Groningen Eelde Airport are within walking distance of the terminal.

How do I pay for an online reservation?

Payment may be made by credit card (Mastercard, Visa and American Express), Giropay and iDeal.

I am physically challenged. Where is the best place for me to park and how do I reserve?

Special bays for the physically challenged are located in car park P1. Please display your special parking ticket clearly behind the windscreen. Please note these parking spaces cannot be reserved in advance but it is possible to reserve a normal space. If  you reserve a space in P1 you will pay the reduced P3 parking tariff. In this case please send the following documents on your return to info@gae.nl; a copy of your passport or ID card, a copy of the handicap parking ticket and a copy of your airline ticket. Please also include your IBAN (International Bank Account Number). The price difference will be refunded as soon as possible.

Where do I pay for the parking ticket?

Parking can be paid for in one of the machines located in the car parks. The machine located near the Bites and Flights restaurant payment is accepts cash, debit and credit cards. At the machines located at P2 and P3 only card payments are possible. If reserving a parking space in our parking shop then only card payments are possible.

Do I receive a refund if my flight is cancelled or delayed?

We regret we cannot make any refunds due to flight delays or cancellations. Please refer to our Car parking Terms and conditions.  You may of course always contact your airline to request a refund.

Is it possible to exit the car park having lost my parking ticket?

If you made a reservation using your car number plate then it is possible to exit the car park without a ticket. If this was not the case then use the entry code (to be found in the right-hand corner or the parking ticket which was sent by email) to exit. If this fails to work for any reason then please contact the parking warden. He/she will help you to exit the car park.

When entering I accidentally pressed the green button. Can I still exit?

If you do this you have entered not using your reservation and will need help exiting. On your return we advise you to contact the parking warden who can be recognised by his/her high visibility jacket. The warden will help you to exit. If a warden cannot be found please ask for help at the ticket desk in the terminal.

How can I enter using my car number plate?

If you have reserved your parking space online via parkeren.groningenairport.nl you can choose to enter the car park using number plate recognition. This is possible in P1 and P3. Enter your car number plate when making the reservation and upon entering the car park the number plate will be read. Take the ticket and the barrier will open. If no ticket appears type in the entry code which is to be found in the right-hand corner of the reservation. Ensure you always have the reservation with you.

Is it possible to choose a specific seat when booking my flight?

This is usually possible via the airline. Your travel agent, tour operator or the airline will help you with this.

What new destinations are being planned?

At present we are negotiating new routes with various airlines which is quite a lengthy process. This is normal as the new route has to fit in with the airlines current network. As soon as new routes become available they will be widely advertised via our website, local press and social media. Keep an eye on our website or Facebook page 

Solar Farm FAQ

Why has the Groningen Eelde Airport constructed a solar farm?

We believe a solar farm fits well into the airport's aim to become more sustainable and socially responsible. We have made the best use of the available space and are able to generate our own electricity and provide extra income for the airport.

Is it safe locating a solar farm at an airport?

Yes, completely safe. There are no risks at all for aircraft and safety was upmost in the design. There are other  airports around the world with experience of such projects.

Where is the solar farm located?

The solar farm is centrally located between the runway, taxiway and apron. The roof of the walkway between the terminal and the aircraft apron is also covered with solar panels.  

How many panels are there in the solar farm?

The Groningen Eelde Airport Solar Farm has 63,196 solar panels.

What happens to the electricity the solar farm produces?

The electricity produced by the solar farm goes directly into the national grid and is subsequently sold on.

Does the airport get electricity directly from the solar farm?

Yes, the airport uses power directly from the solar panels. Together with the panels on the walkways enough power will be produced for the airport to be self sufficient.

Do the residents in the neighbourhood have problems with the reflection from the solar panels?

No, the panels are coated with low reflection white glass to keep reflection to a minimum.

Is it possible to lodge an objection to the solar farm?
